Mount Susitna, known as The Sleeping Lady, is THE landmark to the West of Anchorage. It is seen from almost everywhere in town. There are no other terrain features anywhere near the mountain. For this reason, and because it can be seen from almost every river and glacial valley, this mountain is far and away the best broadcast site in the Anchorage region. It would have been used for this purpose, except for very expensive and limited access (no roads, helicopter only) extreme winds, horrendous icing, and Diesel electric power only, its fuel being flown up in giant fuel bladders slung from a cargo helicopter. Since access is by air, and mountains seem to attract clouds, if something goes wrong, it can take weeks before weather allows an expensive trip for repair.
