Wind, Ice, Salt
- Wind. A lot of folks say they must put antennas in the attic as roof antennas blow apart. If you live in high wind areas, consider spending more money for a longer lasting professional antenna. Instead of spending $70-120 you may spend $300-$500, but the antenna will be rugged. For example, I have used many Kathrein-Scala antennas, and they have had good life in very windy areas.
- Salt. Sea air and salt may call for a good professional antenna coated with epoxy paint. Epoxy will not much affect the electrical performance, and may keep the salt air out.
- Ice and snow. Wet snow can "short out" the antenna, and reduce performance. The effect will probably not be noticed on VHF, but may be noticed on UHF. If you need to protect against this, you will need to get an antenna with a fiberglass radome. As VHF antennas are larger, you can only protect the connections with radomes.
